Former tennis icon Andre Agassi has spoken candidly about the unexpected role pickleball now plays in his daily life. The eight-time Grand Slam champion, widely known for his long career in professional tennis and appearances at events such as the US Open, describes the sport as a meaningful addition that extends well beyond simple recreation.
Pickleball, according to Agassi, offers a rare mix of physical activity and personal satisfaction. While discussing the sport with Kitchen Pickleball, the former world No.1 made his perspective clear.
“Oh, 100 per cent, it's changed my life. It's changed my life physically. It's given me an outlet to do something that I can still improve at.”
Agassi highlighted how pickleball feels different from traditional tennis on the body. Years of high-level tennis placed strain on certain areas, yet pickleball delivers a more balanced physical effort.
He explained the contrast with a detailed comparison:
“It's given me something that I can exert myself a hundred percent and feel it in all the right places the next day, versus a rotation of tennis where I feel it in places that I know are not ideal.”
The comment reflects how many former athletes turn to lower-impact sports that still allow competitive play and skill development.
Building Friendships Through the Game

Another surprising benefit, Agassi noted, involves social connection. The sport has introduced new friendships during a stage of life when social circles often become smaller.
Agassi shared that playing regularly with his friend Seth created opportunities to meet new people.
“Seth and I have made friends. We're in our mid-50s, and it's like you're supposed to have fewer friends, you know, as you get older. Pickleball's given us a chance and a reason. I used to make more friends, and it translates into real-life overlaps and connections.”
The growing popularity of pickleball across the United States reflects this community-driven appeal.
Agassi also addressed the deeper connection he feels toward the sport. Authenticity plays a major role in the activities he chooses, and pickleball aligns naturally with that outlook.
“The truth is, I don't do anything that isn't really authentic to me, and this sport has added so much to our lives. I mean, it's hard not to love it.”
His reflections show how pickleball functions as more than a pastime. It supports physical activity, encourages social interaction, and offers a renewed competitive outlet—particularly for individuals in midlife who still enjoy sport but seek a different pace.
