How Are Ball Numbers Decided in FA Cup Draws?

January 28, 2026

The FA Cup draw often sparks curiosity, especially when ball numbers appear carefully organized rather than random. These numbers follow a structured system designed to keep each round consistent and easy to track. Understanding how this process works adds clarity to one of the competition’s most watched moments.

Ball numbers are mainly linked to tie numbers from the previous round. When two teams are drawn together, they receive a tie number. The winner of that match then carries the same number into the next draw. As a result, continuity stays intact from one round to the next.

For instance, the first tie drawn in the third round becomes tie number one. The winner of that match is later assigned ball number one in the fourth-round draw. Wolves followed this exact path after securing a 6-1 victory over Shrewsbury, which placed them as ball number one for the current fourth round.

Exceptions During Entry Rounds

Facebook | Arsenal FC - Mirror Football | Ball numbers are inherited from previous round ties to maintain continuity.

Certain rounds follow adjusted rules. During the third-round draw, 44 Premier League and Championship clubs enter and receive ball numbers one through 44 in alphabetical order. The remaining 20 slots go to second-round winners, starting with tie number one as ball number 45.

A similar approach applies in the first round when League One and League Two teams join. Those 48 clubs are numbered alphabetically, while the remaining places follow tie order from earlier matches.

This method ensures fairness, consistency, and transparency throughout the FA Cup, allowing every draw to follow a clear and organized structure fans can trust.
