Is Erling Haaland's 6,000-Calorie Diet Healthy?

July 22, 2026

Erling Braut Haaland is known for his explosive speed, strength, and goal-scoring ability. His eating habits have also drawn significant attention. Reports suggest that the Norwegian soccer star consumes around 6,000 calories a day, including foods such as organ meat and raw milk.

While that number may seem surprising compared to standard nutrition guidelines, sports nutrition experts say the reality is more complex. A diet like Haaland's is based on factors such as body composition, training intensity, and individual nutritional needs.

For most people, following the same eating plan without professional guidance is not recommended.

Why Does Erling Haaland Eat 6,000 Calories?

For the average adult, a daily intake of about 2,000 calories is often used as a general guideline. Elite athletes, however, operate under very different conditions.

Lauren Link, MS, RD, CSSD, assistant athletics director for sports nutrition at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, explained that consuming 6,000 calories per day is undoubtedly high, but not unusual in elite sports.

"It's definitely high. But it's not absurdly high in our world."

Link, who also serves as president of the American Sports and Performance Dietitians Association, noted that athletes rarely consume only 2,000 calories. Instead, many require significantly more energy.

"A very low end would be maybe 3,000. And then it's quite common to see 4,000 or 5,000 plus," she said, adding that some athletes even consume 6,000 to 7,000 calories daily.

Athletes who typically reach those numbers include offensive linemen trying to gain weight, competitive swimmers training for several hours each day, and professional soccer players like Haaland, who cover long distances during matches while maintaining high-intensity performance.

High Performance Requires High Energy

Instagram | erling | Haaland requires over 3,200 calories daily just to maintain his ultra-lean, muscular physique.

According to Giancarlo Carvalho, DPT, a physical therapist at Northwell Health STARS Rehabilitation in East Meadow, New York, nutritional needs vary greatly from one athlete to another.

"Every athlete is different. Their nutritional needs are different, how they take in and process nutrients is different, but for the most part, if you are a high-level athlete and your goal is to increase lean muscle mass, this is pretty typical."

Carvalho pointed to Olympic swimming legend Michael Phelps, who reportedly consumed up to 10,000 calories a day during his competitive career.

"He was one of the leanest guys you've ever seen."

At approximately 6 feet 5 inches tall and 207 pounds, Haaland carries a large amount of lean muscle with very little body fat. Carvalho described him as "a genetic anomaly."

He estimated that Haaland likely needs 3,200 to 3,500 calories every day simply to maintain his weight. Building additional lean muscle requires much more energy.

"If you want to put on lean muscle mass, that takes a lot of energy... 6,000 calories sounds about right."

Are Organ Meat and Raw Milk Healthy Choices?

Haaland's diet has also attracted attention because it reportedly includes organ meat and raw milk.

According to Link, organ meat is packed with vitamins and minerals, making it a nutrient-rich addition to a balanced diet.

"It can be a very healthy part of a diet."

Still, she advised people to choose products from reliable sources to reduce food safety concerns.

Raw milk, however, is a different story.

Although it has gained popularity in recent years, Link explained that the primary difference between raw milk and regular milk is that raw milk has not been pasteurized. Pasteurization removes potentially harmful bacteria that may cause illness.

Even if someone like Haaland has access to carefully sourced products, the risk associated with bacteria in raw milk still exists.

Should Everyone Eat More Protein?

Protein is often linked with muscle growth, but experts caution against assuming that more is always better.

Link explained that a general recommendation for adults is around 1 gram of protein per kilogram of body weight per day. Consuming excessive amounts may not provide extra benefits.

"Overdoing protein can have negative impacts for your wallet," she said, while also noting possible concerns for cardiovascular health when intake becomes excessive.

She also emphasized moderation with red meat.

"We do know that red meat in excess can lead to negative — cardio, especially — outcomes."

Instead of focusing on large portions of protein alone, Link recommends balancing meals. A practical approach includes roughly one-third carbohydrates, one-third protein-rich foods, and one-third fruits and vegetables. This combination provides energy, supports recovery, and delivers essential vitamins and minerals.

Why Haaland's Diet Isn't for Everyone

Instagram | erling | Haaland’s peak performance is proof that elite guidance and dedication yield great results.

Professional athletes follow carefully designed nutrition plans based on constant monitoring, intense training schedules, and specific performance goals.

Carvalho recommended consulting a licensed nutrition professional before making major dietary changes.

"They will create a plan for you to either gain or lose weight, or optimize your ability to either put on muscle or lose body fat."

He also acknowledged that Haaland benefits from expert guidance.

"Haaland likely has some of the best people in the world doing this for him. And if you look at him, he's doing a pretty good job. So, that means they're doing their job. What you put in is what you get out."

That level of personalized planning is rarely available to the average person, making direct comparisons unrealistic.

What Can People Learn From Haaland's Diet?

Although copying a 6,000-calorie eating plan is unnecessary for most people, several parts of Haaland's routine reflect solid nutritional habits.

Link highlighted that Haaland eats plenty of whole foods, includes fruits and vegetables, and consistently consumes protein throughout the day.

"He tries to eat a lot of whole food. Plenty of fruits and vegetables are also part of his diet. Consistent protein intake supports his nutrition plan. Those are all good things."

She also reminded readers that professional athletes often have greater financial resources and easier access to premium ingredients.

"I wouldn't want somebody to look at this diet and think, well, I need to eat — insert half the things he mentioned — to have a healthy diet."

Instead, she suggested focusing on simple habits that fit everyday life.

"You can have an extremely healthy diet by just trying to include more fruits and vegetables in your diet, trying to make sure that you have protein present consistently."

Erling Haaland's 6,000-calorie diet is designed to meet the physical demands of elite-level soccer and is not suitable for everyone. Although his food choices include many nutrient-rich options, calorie and protein needs vary based on age, body composition, activity level, and fitness goals.

Before making major dietary changes, consulting a qualified nutrition professional can help ensure a plan that is both safe and appropriate.
